How to use the crossword puzzles
- Pick Easy, Medium or Hard. Each level has a new puzzle every day, the same for everyone.
- Click a square or a clue, then type. The highlighted squares show the word you are filling; click the square again or press space to switch between Across and Down.
- Letters already in the grid are free hints. Use Check to find mistakes and Reveal if you are stuck, or press New puzzle for another grid at the same level.
How the puzzles are made
Every grid is built from a bank of words, each with a clue written for that word and level. The builder fits the words so that each one crosses at least one other, the way a printed crossword does, and gives away a share of the letters as hints: about a third on Easy, a fifth on Medium and very few on Hard. Spellings are the ones shared by American, British, Canadian and Australian English, so no answer depends on where you learned it.

Good for learning a language
Teachers use crosswords to fix new vocabulary, because you have to recall the word from its meaning and spell it exactly. The Hard level in each language is built from the vocabulary found in advanced exam lists (SAT and GRE for English, DELE, DELF and Goethe for Spanish, French and German); working through it a few times a week is a painless way to grow a vocabulary. Learners of Spanish, French or German can start on Easy, where the clues use simple everyday language.
Questions and answers
How are the levels different?
Easy uses everyday words in a 12 by 12 grid with about a third of the letters filled in. Medium uses wider vocabulary and general knowledge in a 14 by 14 grid with fewer hints. Hard uses advanced English vocabulary, the kind found in exams such as the SAT, GRE and IELTS, in a 16 by 16 grid with very few letters given.
Is there a new crossword every day?
Yes. Each level has a daily puzzle that changes at midnight in your time zone and is the same for everyone that day, so you can compare times with friends. 'New puzzle' builds an extra one whenever you want.
Does it save my progress?
Yes, in your browser. Close the tab and come back to the same puzzle and your letters and time are still there.
Can I print it?
Press Print. The grid and the clues print on one page without the buttons, which works well for a classroom or a train journey.
Which languages are available?
English, Spanish, French and German, each with its own word bank and clues written in that language. Choose the language from the menu above the grid. As in printed crosswords, accents are dropped in the grid (É becomes E), Spanish keeps Ñ as its own letter, and German umlauts are written as AE, OE and UE with ß as SS; typing the accented letter on your keyboard fills the right squares.
I'm stuck on a word. Can I get help without revealing it?
Use Check to see which letters are wrong, or reveal a single letter. You can also look up the pattern in our crossword solver: type the letters you have with a ? for each blank.
