Learning German with crosswords
A crossword makes you recall a word from its meaning and spell it exactly, which is why language teachers use them to fix vocabulary. Because the clues here are in German, you practise reading definitions as well as recalling words. Start on Easy until you finish without reveals, then move up.

Questions and answers
Are the German crossword clues written in German?
Yes. Every clue is written in German for that word and level, not translated from English. Headings use German too: Waagerecht and Senkrecht.
Which level should a German learner start with?
Easy. It uses everyday words with short, simple clues and gives about a third of the letters. Medium suits intermediate learners; Hard uses advanced vocabulary of the kind found in Goethe-Zertifikat exam lists and will stretch native speakers.
How are accents handled?
As in printed German crosswords, umlauts are written as two letters (Ä = AE, Ö = OE, Ü = UE) and ß as SS. Type ü on your keyboard and it fills two squares.
Is there a new puzzle every day?
Yes, one per level, the same for everyone that day. 'New puzzle' builds as many extra grids as you like from the 459 words in the German bank.
